The team match on Tuesday lived up to its billing and went to the wire. It was a night of fun, tension and great squash with Ray Waller being reprimanded by his kids for over zealous support!
West Herts brought along a very strong side and we started the evening losing at number three only for Neil Waller to pull it back at number 4 so 1-1.
Phil Waller was elevated to number one for this game and was a bit of a sacrificial lamb but played well going down to a player who has been on the PSA circuit. This left Peter Gunter at 5 and Keith Timms at 2 needing to win and they bought it home in style.
Pete Gunter playing a sublime game of cat and mouse moving his opponent around the court and hitting the telling winner at will was a pleasure to watch. Keith as normal was playing a game of attrition and his opponent had to hit a fantastic shot to stop Keith getting it back. To be fair there were plenty of these but it is a high risk having to hit winner after winner and eventually mistakes crept in and Keith pulled away to win 3-1.
So a 3-2 victory for the 1st team makes it almost certain that they will win the league with 2 matches to play.
It looks like this weekend will be a scorcher so get down to the club and enjoy sitting in the ‘garden’ under the new umbrellas supplied by the brewery. On Sunday the Middlesex closed tennis tournament starts so whilst sitting in the shade you can watch good tennis. This tournament goes on all week with the final next Saturday so come down and enjoy the atmosphere.
With such nice weather why not try out Padel tennis if you have not played yet. Membership of Padel is free if you are a member of any section of he club and rackets and balls are available if you do not have your own. You do need 4 people to play but if you are lost as to who might make up your 4 then please get in touch and I will endeavour to get the extra players.
